Tampura drone

Sa = C4 (261.63 Hz)

Four-string tampura — Pa / Sa / Sa / Sa (octave below). The audio is server-rendered then looped seamlessly in your browser.

Your first three sounds

The easiest three sounds a complete beginner can produce. Do these in order. Don't skip ahead.

  1. 1

    Open Sa (lower)

Pluck the leftmost string. A deep, sustained drone. Let it ring.

  2. 2

    Open Pa

Second string from the left. The perfect fifth above Sa (3:2 = 702¢ = 330 Hz, the 22-śruti Sandīpanī). Ring them together.

  3. 3

    Sa + Ri₁ (fret 1)

Hold fret 1 of the Sa string, pluck — Ri₁, the narrow half-step on the 22-śruti grid (90¢ above Sa, śruti 2, NOT the wider 12-TET 100¢ keyboard half-step).

How Veena Practice Works

Place your device near your veena or use the virtual touch frets above. The app listens to your playing via microphone and provides real-time feedback on 22-śruti pitch accuracy.

Color coding: Green (±10¢) is in tune, amber (±30¢) is close, red (>50¢) needs work.

Fretboard: The visualization shows your veena's fretboard with the target note highlighted. Play the correct string and fret to match.

About Veena Practice

The veena (vīṇā) is the queen of Carnatic instruments. This module teaches you proper plucking technique, fret positions, and gamaka ornaments step by step.

Levels: Start with open strings and basic scales, progress to sarali varisai, janta varisai, and eventually complete compositions.

Feedback: The app detects your pitch in real-time and shows color-coded feedback on the fretboard visualization. Green means in tune, amber means close, red means needs adjustment.
